A S S E M B L Y

Every Friday we have assembly.

The Year 7 and 8s host the assemblies and it is their responsibility to organise it and choose a song we are going to sing.

This week it was all about Liam, Rongo and Nathan.  It was a new step as it was our first day of GAFE and therefore Google Slides.  Not a bad effort for their first presentation!

Kahikatea's stars of the week are Porsha, Tyronne and Thomas!  Awesome work :-)

We got GOOGLIFIED!

Friday was a pretty exciting day in Kahikatea.  We finally got our GAFE (Google Apps For Education) accounts and had a good play around.

The process went like this:
1) fully understand the rules
2) read and understand the citizenship agreement and sign if we agreed to follow what it said
3) we got given our email addresses and our passwords so we could log in.  We then got to choose our own new password following the choose a good password guidelines.
4) We had a search around our google drives and found the work Whaea Danielle had set for us.  That helped us learn how to use Google Docs.

Check out some of our exploring below.....

Tuakana/Teina today in Kahikatea

Today we had the lovely little people from Room 3 join us.  It was our job to teach them some computer skills and make a poster.  We weren't supposed to touch the keyboard too much, but instead be a good teacher and show them how to learn new skills.

Our poster had to have:
* a background colour
* a border
* our names in different fonts and colours
* a picture of our favourite animals and a speech bubble with some facts about our animals.

Here are some pictures of how awesomely we were working and teaching:

Descriptive Writing

Last week the awesome writers of Kahikatea were shown a 360degree photo of a beach.  Their job was to write a description of what they could see, hear, smell, feel and taste.

The 360 degree photo worked really well as we could manipulate the video to look up, down and behind us.

Here are photos of the published work.  Whaea Danielle was super impressed, and we hope you will be as well!

We had our first school assembly for the year on Friday.  The senior students in Room 1 take the assemblies.  First up to host was Rongo, Sandy and Kainah.  They had to plan the assembly, make a presentation and choose a song to sing.

They did an amazing job and everyone agreed that it was a much more exciting assembly than normal.

Whaea Michaelene announced the star house captains.

Liam, Jacob, Rongo, Kyle, Theo and Cam (absent from photo) were announced.  They were told to make sure they step up and show awesome leadership!!

Liam and Rongo had first honours as winning house captains of Piwakawaka!

R.E.S.P.E.C.T....find out what it means to me!

Our first school value that we are looking at this year is respect.  It's something that we all need to work on to make sure we're the best that we can be.  Here are our first thoughts on the subject:

Reading

Each week in reading we have been given a contract.  We choose a certain number of activities out of the contract, and complete them in the time frame.

This week our reading has been about Earthquakes.

One of the activities in the contract was to create a tower that would withstand a Whaea Danielle earthquake.  The tower would be made out of spaghetti pasta and blu-tack.

Very interesting to see the different base shapes and different techniques to build a tower.

Check out our creations. On Monday Whaea will shake them to see if they pass the test...bring it on!

Digital Citizenship Rules

From discussions and websites, and in class conversation Whaea Danielle came up with our 6 rules that we will use in our classroom.

Our task was in 2 parts.  We put ourselves into 6 groups and were given a rule each.  We had to solve the jigsaw puzzle of our rule, and then we had 24 hours to write and practice a presentation to show what that rule means.

Keep checking back for the presentations!

Digital Citizenship

We are spending this week learning to be great digital citizens.  We started off by talking about the different types of technology we could use in our learning, and as well as the rules we need to have when we use our technology.

Here are our collaborative brainstorms we did today.

If you have any thoughts please feel free to add them on!
